We do ongoing mapping work exploring our relationship to space and our community. We created both an object map and paper map to highlight problems in De Doorns. We also incorporate abstract mapping into embroidery work.
Puppetry
Our participants explored object theatre and puppetry. We created our own puppets out of recyclables as a way to discuss community waste disposal and learned the basic of puppetry performance. We also explored the role of puppets in social movements around the world.
Blankets
As our first project, our members created hand-knitted blankets that we donated to Brave Heart Orphanage. This encapsulates our goals of learn new skills and giving back to the community.
Cook Book
We created a recipe book of local dishes that hold a special meaning to us. We shared our dishes as well as the environments that we cook in, culminating in a final feast. For this project, we collaborated with students at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, exchanging our memorable recipes between South Africa, Germany and the United Kingdom.
COP26: Stitches for Survival
We created a long knitted blanket to raise awareness about climate change for COP26 talks. Each panel was created by a different member and holds symbolic meaning. One is made from plastic to raise awareness for ocean pollution while another is green to represent the natural valley of the Hex River Valley.
16 Days of Violence
We took part in the South African '16 Days of Violence' campaign to raise awareness of gender-based violence. Each member created two embroidered squares stating their expectations for relationships, as well as two squares saying what they will no longer tolerate. These embroideries were then transformed into postcards with information about emergency resources for gender-based violence victims on the back. These cards were then placed around the community.
